Email me at edwardchang@berkeley.net with any concerns that you have. I will try to reply ASAP during working hours.

As mentioned below, you should proactively email me so that you can:

  1. Have anything that you lost the next day
  2. Making appointments for taking a test in which you missed the entire day of school for.
  3. Any appointments that that you need for something during lunch time.

Materials Needed

If you are not responsible with these materials, you will be at a disadvantage.

  1. A graphing calculator (TI-83, TI-84, or TI-84 Plus are recommended) will be needed for work throughout the year. If you’re on a budget, you can acquire one by: a. Any store like Target or Staples. b. looking on Craigslist or eBay to see if you can find a cheaper used one
  2. Textbook: The Practice of Statistics, 5th edition (Starnes, Tabor, Yates, Moore 2014) For practice, you should plan to bring your textbook to class. There will be no textbooks in the classroom for you to borrow from me.
  3. During class, packets will be provided for you to write and take notes on. If you lose a packet, please email me so that I have a copy for you the next day. It is your own responsibility to have it on you at all times during class.

I am happy to take any appointments during lunch as long as you email me at least 2 days beforehand.

Grades

Grades will be assigned on a traditional scale:

Grading Scale

A: ≥ 90%
B: ≥ 80%
C: ≥ 70%
D: ≥ 60%
F: < 60%

Components

Homework and Classwork: 25% Homework: At most one problem set every week, will be provided a week in advance. Classwork: Ranges from warm-ups to exit tickets.

Quizzes: 25% At most one quiz a week, based on skills from classwork. The two worst quizzes will be dropped from your grade per semester.

Tests: 30% One test per chapter, for a total of twelve tests within nine months. The single worst test will be dropped from your grade per semester.

Semester Exam: 20% A cumulative exam of the material covered over the semester.

Keep up in class

The amount of content in this course makes this course as challenging or more challenging than taking Calculus. You may struggle in Calculus because of your Algebra skills, but that is the main barrier for Calculus. Although AP Statistics is more accessible, it does not mean that it is easier than Calculus. In my personal experience, AP Statistics was harder than AP Calculus AB.

Not much prior mathematical knowledge is required for success in this course, but it is a very challenging course that places high emphasis on your ability to think logically and critically, and express that thinking clearly in writing. It is also a course that builds on itself chapter by chapter. For example, Ch 8 requires you to be on top with knowledge and skills from Ch 2, 4, 7. And Ch 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 keep introducing new, different methods to evaluate claims for different types of data. So staying current with your homework, and being consistent with your effort in general, is extremely important. If you don’t keep up in class, you will struggle with future material.

PLEASE advocate for yourself and get as much help as you need ASAP. I am more than happy to help you when you immediately seek help, however if you are behind one to two weeks, it’s frustrating!!!!

If you are behind, there is very little attention that I can give you to learn past material when we are past that point. We practically have one lesson a day on a new topic and if you don’t understand the basics of the previous material, there is little to no support I can help you with during class except to tell you to “look back in your packet.”

Extra credit opportunities

From time to time, there will be challenge problems on tests for extra credit that challenge you to apply your understanding.

Are there “extra” assignments?

No, there will not be any extra assignments because you missed out on an assessment, did not follow along in class, or did not study enough throughout the semester.

If you run into any verifiable sickness or other situation that prevents you from doing your best, then we can talk about other ways for you to catch up.

Assessment Policy

The assessments will hold you up to the expectation that the AP exam also holds you up to.

The AP exam consists of:

  • 40 Multiple Choice Questions for 90 minutes (2.25 minutes per question)
  • 6 Free Response Questions for 90 minutes (15 minutes per question)

All assessments and their respective re-take will be announced at least 2 weeks in advance.

  1. Missing the period of the test:
    • If you miss the period of the test but are present in school, you may come in afterschool (the day of) to H204 to take the test.
    • If you miss the entire day, first email me ASAP (otherwise, I will not be expecting you) and you have only until the next school day to take it in H204.
  2. Accommodations:
    • Extended time: You may continue your test in H204 afterschool (the day of).

No extended time will be given because of tardiness and these deadlines will be enforced strictly. If you miss an opportunity for assessment/reassessment completely, you will keep the current grade that you have on that standard (including any 0’s because you forgot to take a test or fill out a form)

Retakes

All retakes will be designated to be taken afterschool, during the Math 2 afterschool tutoring sessions.

  1. You can retake up to 3 tests per semester.
  2. When it’s time for a retake, a Google Form will be posted on classroom. If you do not fill out the form by the deadline as indicated, you will not get a retake.
  3. You much take the retake within 3 school days of the first day of the retake.

The retake system in this class is not to be abused. If you are not doing the work in class and expect for me to pick up after what you decided not to do, you face the consequences. You will do at least decent overall if you pay attention in class, ask questions, and grapple with the concepts during class (see the expectations). The retake is there for you to show improvement, not as a way for you to sleep through, gossip during, and/or ignore lessons.

Relying on retakes means that you are behind, and students who have fell behind in the past in this course have not enjoyed their academic experience in the course.

A Parting Thought

Grades and penalties aren’t the purpose of this course. I really just want you to learn. I want all of you to be successful here. AP Statistics is a college level course and these policies are here to make it so. If you weren’t ready for these strict rules, you should seek me out for help as soon as you see yourself slipping off.

If you fall behind, you will likely not recover in this class. I promise that if you put the effort and attention into this class during lessons, you will get a grade that you are satisfied with. The concepts that we encounter will be tough to understand on your own, but by doing the work that I assign, you will understand it so much better than just copying down answers and trying to follow a calculation that I did on the board.
